Preparing a nursery is one of the most enjoyable decorating projects there is, but it is also one where practical decisions matter most. A good nursery is safe, easy to use at three in the morning and calm enough to help everyone rest. Style comes after that, and it is easier than you might think to have both.

Start with safety

Place the cot away from windows, radiators, heaters and blind cords, and keep it clear of shelves or pictures that could fall. Anchor wardrobes, chests of drawers and bookcases to the wall. Choose a cot that meets current safety standards, and keep it simple inside: a firm, well-fitting mattress and a fitted sheet. Follow current official safe-sleep guidance in your country, and check it again as your baby grows.

Use paints and finishes labelled low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and decorate well before the baby arrives so the room has time to air.

Plan the layout around routines

Think about the three main activities: sleeping, changing and feeding. Keep the changing area close to storage for nappies and clothes, and position the feeding chair where you can reach a small table for water, a lamp and a muslin. Leave a clear path from the door to the cot so you can move around easily in low light.

Choose calm, flexible colours

Soft neutrals, warm whites, pale greens, muted blues and dusty pinks create a restful backdrop. Very bright, saturated colours can feel stimulating in a room meant for sleep. If you love colour, add it through bedding, art and a rug, which are easy to change as your child grows and develops their own tastes.

Lighting for day and night

Blackout blinds or lined curtains help with daytime naps and early summer mornings. Fit cordless blinds where possible. For night feeds, a dimmable lamp or a soft night light with a warm tone gives enough light to see without fully waking anyone. Put the main ceiling light on a dimmer too.

Tip: Sit in the feeding chair at night with only your chosen lamp on. If the light shines directly into your eyes or onto the cot, move it before the baby arrives.

Storage that keeps up

Babies come with a surprising amount of kit. A chest of drawers with a changing top saves space. Baskets on low shelves hold muslins and toys, and labelled boxes in the wardrobe keep the next size of clothes ready. Choose furniture that will still be useful later, such as a cot that converts to a toddler bed.

A room that grows with them
