Christmas Decorating Ideas for an Elegant Home
Festive decorating that feels elegant rather than cluttered: choosing a palette, styling the tree and mantel, layering lighting and setting a beautiful table for the holidays.

Christmas decorating can easily tip into clutter, with every surface covered and colours competing for attention. An elegant festive home feels warm, generous and inviting, yet still calm. The secret is a clear palette, natural materials and plenty of soft light.
Choose a palette
Pick two or three colours and stick to them throughout the house. Classic combinations include deep green, gold and cream; red, green and natural timber; or a quieter palette of white, silver and soft grey. Bring in your existing room colours so the decorations look as if they belong.
Style the tree
Start with the lights, wrapping them deep into the branches, not just around the outside, so the tree glows from within. Then add larger baubles first, spread evenly, before filling in with smaller ornaments. Repeating a few types of decoration in your chosen colours looks more polished than one of everything. Finish with a simple topper and a tree skirt or basket around the base.
Dress the mantel
A fireplace is a natural focal point at Christmas. A fresh or good-quality artificial garland, layered with eucalyptus, pine cones and a few dried oranges, looks lush without being fussy. Add candles of varying heights (keeping them well away from greenery) and a pair of stockings. Leave the mirror or artwork above visible, perhaps with a wreath hung in front.
Bring in natural greenery
Natural materials give a festive home its warmth and scent. Use branches of pine, fir or eucalyptus in large vases, a wreath on the front door and small sprigs on bedside tables or in the bathroom. Combining real and good artificial greenery is practical in warmer homes.
Layer the lighting
Soft lighting creates the festive atmosphere more than any decoration. Turn off ceiling lights in the evening and rely on table lamps, fairy lights in glass jars or on shelves, and candles or flameless candles. Warm white lights look more elegant than multicoloured ones in most schemes.
Tip: Edit before you add. Pack away some everyday accessories for the season so the festive pieces have space and the room never feels crowded.
Set the festive table
A linen tablecloth or runner, simple white plates, cloth napkins tied with ribbon or greenery, and a low centrepiece of foliage and candles make a beautiful table. Keep the centrepiece low so guests can talk across it.
