Our homes feel different as the seasons change. Bright spring mornings, long summer evenings, cooler autumn days and dark winter nights all call for slightly different rooms. Updating your home with the seasons does not mean buying a new set of decorations four times a year. With a neutral, well-planned base and a small collection of seasonal pieces, you can shift the mood of a room in an afternoon.

Build a flexible base first

Seasonal changes work best against a calm, neutral backdrop. Walls, large furniture and flooring in warm whites, stones, taupes or soft greens act as a canvas for changing textiles and accessories. If your sofa is a plain, durable fabric, you can make it feel light and summery or cosy and wintry simply by changing what sits on it.

  • Choose large pieces in timeless, neutral colours.
  • Buy cushion covers rather than whole cushions, so inserts can stay and covers can rotate.
  • Keep a dedicated storage box or drawer for each season's textiles and objects.

Tip: Label your seasonal storage boxes and keep a photo of how each room was styled. It makes switching back next year much quicker.

Spring: lighten and freshen

Spring is the natural time to clear out what has accumulated over winter and let in more light.

  • Declutter and deep-clean. Wash windows, curtains and cushion covers, and clear surfaces.
  • Lighten textiles. Swap heavy throws for lighter cotton or linen, and introduce fresh colours such as soft green, pale yellow or sky blue.
  • Bring in fresh stems. Branches of blossom, tulips or simple greenery in a clear vase instantly signal the season.
  • Open up the windows. Tie back curtains or pull them fully open, and consider layering sheers for soft daylight.
  • Rearrange for light. Move a reading chair closer to the window to enjoy longer days.

Summer: airy and relaxed

In summer, the aim is to keep rooms cool, uncluttered and connected to the outdoors.

  • Pare back. Store some cushions and throws to give rooms a breezier feel.
  • Use natural fibres. Linen bedding, cotton throws, jute or sisal rugs and rattan baskets feel cool to the touch.
  • Manage heat. Light-coloured blinds or sheer curtains filter sunlight; lined curtains drawn during the hottest part of the day help keep rooms cooler.
  • Blur indoors and out. Bring potted plants inside, and extend your living space onto a balcony or terrace with outdoor cushions and lanterns.
  • Edit colour. Crisp whites, sandy neutrals and touches of blue or green feel fresh in bright light.

Autumn: warm and textured

As evenings draw in, rooms need more warmth, softness and light.

  • Layer textiles. Bring back wool throws, chunky knits and velvet or boucle cushions.
  • Shift the palette. Rust, ochre, olive, chocolate and deep burgundy pair beautifully with natural timber.
  • Add natural materials. Dried grasses, seed heads, branches and seasonal produce such as squash or apples in a wooden bowl make simple, low-cost displays.
  • Increase lamp light. Switch on table and floor lamps earlier and use warm white bulbs. Candles (or flameless alternatives) add a gentle glow.
  • Add a rug. A wool rug layered over a summer jute rug instantly makes a room feel cosier.

Winter: cosy and gathering

Winter is about comfort, warmth and creating spaces where people want to gather.

  • Swap heavier curtains in. Interlined or thermal-lined curtains help keep warmth in and make rooms feel enclosed and snug. Our curtains and window treatments service can advise on linings for cold rooms.
  • Layer lighting. Rely on lamps, wall lights and accent lighting rather than bright overhead lights. Dimmers are invaluable in winter.
  • Use richer textures. Velvet, sheepskin, wool and heavier linen add depth.
  • Decorate thoughtfully for celebrations. Choose a theme and colour palette that suits your existing scheme, and favour natural greenery, dried oranges, pine cones and reusable decorations.
  • Create a cosy corner. A comfortable chair, a throw, a side table and a good reading lamp turn any corner into a winter retreat.

What to rotate and what to keep

Not everything needs to change each season. Focus on the items that have the biggest effect for the least effort.

  1. Cushion covers and throws: the quickest way to change colour and texture.
  2. Bedding: lighter in warm months, heavier and textured in cold months.
  3. Rugs: natural fibre in summer, wool in winter.
  4. Flowers, branches and greenery: always seasonal and often inexpensive.
  5. Small accessories: a few seasonal objects on a mantelpiece, shelf or coffee table.

Keep it sustainable

Seasonal decorating does not need to create waste. Buy fewer, better pieces that you will reuse year after year. Use foraged or garden materials where possible. Choose decorations made from natural, durable materials over single-use plastic. Store items carefully so they last.

A simple seasonal routine

At the start of each season, spend an hour on a quick reset: declutter surfaces, swap textiles, adjust lighting, refresh flowers or greenery and rotate a few accessories. Over time, you will build a small, personal collection that makes your home feel right all year round.

If you would like help building a flexible base or a seasonal styling plan, our home accessories and styling service can work with the pieces you already own, and our living room decoration service can create a scheme designed to adapt through the year.
