A home office has to do two jobs at once: help you concentrate during the working day and sit comfortably within the rest of your home. Whether you have a dedicated study or a corner of the guest room, the same principles apply. Get the basics right first, then add the details that make the space feel like yours.

Place the desk with care

Where possible, position the desk at right angles to a window. You get daylight across the work surface without glare on the screen or a bright window behind it. Facing a blank wall can feel confining; facing into the room, with a wall behind you, often feels more settled and gives you a tidier backdrop for video calls.

Keep the desk out of main walkways, and make sure there is a power supply close by so cables do not trail across the floor.

Invest in comfort first

The chair matters more than the desk. Choose one with adjustable seat height and lumbar support, and set it so your feet rest flat on the floor and your forearms are roughly level with the desk top. The top of the screen should sit around eye level; a monitor arm or simple riser makes this easy. A desk around 72–75 cm high suits most people, and a depth of at least 60 cm keeps the screen at a comfortable distance.

Light the work, not just the room

Daylight is ideal, but you also need a good task lamp with a directional head, placed on the opposite side to your writing hand to avoid shadows. Add softer ambient light from a ceiling fitting or wall lights so the room does not feel like a spotlight in the dark on winter afternoons. Slightly cooler bulbs (around 3000–4000K) at the desk can help with focus, while warmer light elsewhere keeps the room comfortable.

Tame the clutter

Paperwork, chargers and equipment quickly take over. Closed cupboards or drawers keep the visual noise down, while a few open shelves give room for books and objects you enjoy looking at. Use a cable tray under the desk and a single drawer for small items. A clear desk at the end of the day makes it much easier to switch off.

Tip: Style the wall behind you as if it were a shelf in your living room: a few books, a plant and one piece of art. It is what colleagues see on every call.

Choose colours that help you settle

Soft, warm neutrals, muted greens and gentle blues tend to feel calm without being flat. Darker colours can create a cosy, library-like study, especially with timber joinery. Whatever you choose, bring in texture through a rug, a linen blind or a timber desk so the room does not feel like a corporate office.
