Many people work from home without a spare room to dedicate to it. The good news is that a productive workspace needs surprisingly little floor area: a well-lit surface, a comfortable chair and somewhere to put things away. The challenge is making it fit neatly into a room that has another purpose.

Find the right spot

Look for underused areas: an alcove beside a chimney breast, the end of a landing, a deep window bay, the space under the stairs or one wall of a guest bedroom. A desk only needs to be around 100–120 cm wide and 50–60 cm deep for a laptop and a notebook. Measure carefully and check where the nearest socket is before you commit.

Build up, not out

In a small space, wall area is more valuable than floor area. Shelves or a slim cabinet above the desk keep the work surface clear. Wall-mounted rails with hooks and pots hold stationery and headphones. A pegboard painted the same colour as the wall gives flexible storage without looking busy.

The cupboard office

If you want work to disappear at the end of the day, consider a desk built into a cupboard or wardrobe with doors that close over it. Even a freestanding bureau or a desk with a fold-down flap can do the same job in a living room or bedroom.

Choose furniture that flexes

Wall-mounted floating desks take up less visual space than a desk with legs. A chair that tucks fully under the desk, or a stylish dining-style chair that can move to the table when guests come, keeps the area from feeling like an office. Storage ottomans and baskets under a console desk add capacity without clutter.

Light it well

Small workspaces are often in darker corners. A wall-mounted swing-arm lamp frees up the desk surface completely. An LED strip under a shelf gives even light across the desk with no glare. If the desk is in a bedroom, choose a lamp with a warm setting so it can double as bedside or reading light in the evening.

Tip: Paint the desk area, the shelves above and the wall behind in one colour. Colour-blocking defines the workspace as a zone and makes it look deliberate rather than squeezed in.

Keep it calm

A small office stays usable only if it stays tidy. Limit what lives on the desk to a lamp, a plant and one tray. Store paperwork digitally where you can, and do a five-minute reset at the end of each day.
