A balcony is often the most underused space in an apartment. With a little planning, even a narrow strip can become somewhere to have morning coffee, read in the evening or grow herbs. The key is to treat it as an outdoor room: decide what you want to do there, then choose a few pieces that do it well.
Check the practicalities first
Before buying anything, check any building rules about what can be fixed to walls or railings, and be mindful of weight, particularly for large planters filled with wet soil. Notice how much sun and wind the balcony gets at different times of day, because this affects both the plants you choose and the materials that will last.
Choose compact, weather-ready furniture
A bistro set with two folding chairs and a small round table suits most narrow balconies. A slim bench along the wall with storage underneath gives seating and somewhere to keep cushions. Fold-down wall tables or railing-mounted bar shelves work even where there is no room for a table. Look for powder-coated aluminium, teak, acacia or synthetic rattan, which handle the weather well.
Grow up, not out
Vertical planting saves floor space. Use railing planters, wall-mounted pots, a ladder shelf or a trellis with a climbing plant. Group a few larger pots in one corner rather than scattering small ones. Choose plants for your conditions: herbs and lavender for sunny spots, ferns and ivy for shade, and grasses for windy, exposed balconies.
Soften the floor
Concrete or tiled balcony floors can feel cold. Interlocking deck tiles are easy to lay and lift, and an outdoor rug instantly makes the space feel like a room. Choose a rug made for outdoor use so it dries quickly and resists fading.
Add privacy and shelter
Bamboo or rattan screens, outdoor curtains or tall planting provide privacy from neighbours and some shelter from wind. A small parasol or a shade sail can make a sunny balcony usable in the middle of the day, as long as it is secured properly.
Light it for the evening
Lighting is what turns a balcony into an evening retreat. Festoon or string lights along the railing or ceiling, solar lanterns on the floor and a couple of battery candles on the table create a warm glow without wiring. Keep the light warm and low rather than bright.
Tip: Choose cushions and textiles in one colour family that echoes your living room. The balcony will feel like an extension of the home when the doors are open.
