In a small home, storage is the difference between a calm space and a cluttered one. The aim is not to store more, but to store well: everything easy to find, with surfaces kept mostly clear. The best storage ideas also look good, so they add to the room instead of fighting it.

Go full height

Floor-to-ceiling cabinets and shelving give far more capacity than low units, while taking the same floor area. Painting built-ins the same colour as the walls makes them recede visually. Use the high shelves for items you need only occasionally, such as seasonal clothes, luggage and spare bedding.

Find hidden space

Under the bed

A storage bed with drawers or a lift-up base can hold a surprising amount. If you keep your existing bed, use lidded boxes on wheels.

Under the stairs

Pull-out drawers or a fitted cupboard under the stairs make good use of awkward space for shoes, coats or cleaning equipment.

Above doors and in alcoves

A shelf above a doorway can hold books or baskets. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are ideal for fitted cupboards with shelves above.

Choose furniture with storage built in

Ottomans, benches with lift-up seats, coffee tables with drawers and media units with doors all provide storage without adding extra pieces. In a dining area, a banquette bench with drawers beneath seats more people than chairs and stores tableware or games.

Use the walls

Floating shelves, wall-mounted cabinets and hooks keep floors clear. In the kitchen, rails with hooks hold utensils, and a narrow shelf can take spices or cups. In the hallway, hooks and a slim shelf for keys save floor space. Keep open shelves curated, mixing practical items with a few decorative ones.

Mix open and closed storage

Open shelves are lovely for books and objects but quickly look cluttered when full. A good rule is roughly two-thirds closed storage to one-third open in a small home. Baskets and lidded boxes on open shelves combine the look of open storage with the tidiness of closed storage.

Tip: Give everything a home, then follow one simple rule: when something new comes in, something old goes out.

Build good habits

Even the best storage needs maintenance. A ten-minute tidy each evening and a seasonal clear-out keep a small home under control.
