The entryway is the first thing guests see and the place you pass through every day. It also has to cope with coats, shoes, bags, keys and post. A well-designed entrance handles all of that quietly while giving a clear sense of the style of the rest of the home.

Start with a console and mirror

A console table with a mirror above it is the classic entryway pairing for good reason. The console gives you a surface for keys and post, and the mirror reflects light, makes the space feel larger and allows a last check before leaving. Choose a console with a depth to suit the space; in narrow hallways, a slim wall-mounted shelf of 20–25 cm deep can do the same job. Hang the mirror so its centre sits roughly at eye level, and choose one that is around two-thirds the width of the console.

Hide the everyday

Clutter collects fastest at the front door. Closed storage keeps it under control: a shoe cabinet, a bench with drawers or baskets beneath, or built-in cupboards if space allows. A small bowl or tray on the console gives keys a home. Hooks at a convenient height are useful for the coats you wear daily, while seasonal coats live elsewhere.

Tip: Give everyone in the house one hook and one basket. It is the simplest way to stop shoes and bags spreading across the floor.

Light it warmly

Entrances are often dark, with little natural light. A statement pendant or flush ceiling fitting provides general light, while a table lamp on the console adds a welcoming glow in the evening. Wall lights either side of a mirror are flattering and practical. Use warm white bulbs to make arriving home feel inviting.

Choose durable surfaces

Entryway floors take more wear than anywhere else. Stone, porcelain and good-quality timber-effect tiles are easy to clean. A washable, low-pile rug or a runner softens the space and catches dirt; make sure it has a non-slip backing. On walls, a scrubbable paint finish or panelling to dado height protects against scuffs.

Add personality

A piece of art, a vase of fresh or dried stems, or a sculptural object on the console gives a sense of who lives in the home. Keep the styling simple so the console stays usable. In larger entrances, a round table with a large arrangement in the centre makes a confident statement.
